How To Make BHO Gummies

Francis Cassidy October 5, 2018 4 comments

BHO Gummies are a popular form of edible. Not only are they super tasty, but they’re also discreet and simple to dose.

When it comes to producing them in the kitchen, a batch can be thrown together conveniently. You can quickly and efficiently prepare a large batch that’ll keep for considerable time with minimal effort. While many different recipes exist, the use of BHO concentrates (Butane Hash Oil) is one of the preferred methods. The potency, simplicity, and precise dosing offered by BHO are what make BHO gummies such an attractive option.

What Is Butane Hash Oil?

Butane Hash Oil (BHO) is a cannabis concentrate where the active compounds of the cannabis plant are extracted using the solvent butane. With a rich yellow color and viscous nature, it gives BHO a consistency similar to that of honey. As extremely potent extracts they often provide an extreme medicated effect to the uninitiated or those with low tolerances.

There are several types of butane hash oil. Common forms include shatter, crumble, budder, wax, and sap. While they are all similar in nature, they differ in consistency and potency with some containing THC levels in excess of 90%.

Why Sourcing Quality BHO Extract is Important?

Firstly, everyone should know that butane is a dangerous solvent to work with. It’s both flammable and volatile and requires expertise and the proper equipment to ensure it’s handled safely.

As with any concentrate, one must be aware that with that concentrated potency comes the concentration of potentially harmful compounds. Pesticides and molds can occur in comparatively high ratios so the BHO you choose should come from a reputable and trustworthy supplier. In addition, traces of butane may still be found in the concentrate after the extraction process has completed. Suppliers will always run the BHO through a purging process to remove the residual solvent. In legal jurisdictions, there should be little issue, but if you’re sourcing your BHO outside elsewhere, then it’s important to ensure that the residual traces of butane are purged to safe levels. A 2012 study carried out by the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology in Washington DC showed that the human body can tolerate exposure up to a certain level, but thereafter neurotoxicity and eventual organ failure may be the result.

Why BHO Gummies Are the Preferred Edible for Many

Gummies are the ideal cannabis edible for many. They offer versatility when it comes to flavor and you can tailor them just to your liking. When it comes to shelf life, they outperform many other forms of edibles such as brownies or cookies. Gummies can be efficiently made in large batches with little extra effort required. In addition, they provide that discrete method of dosing with no associated odor, ideal for those who need to medicate on the go.BHO green gummy bears

A Vegan Recipe For BHO Gummies

What follows is a quick and easy vegan-friendly recipe to make your very own batch of BHO gummies. While gelatin typically thickens the solution, in this recipe we opt for the unusual option of seaweed. Seaweed is nutritious, and also contains chemicals such as carrageenan, which cause food to thicken and stabilize at different temperatures.

To begin with, gather up the following:

  • A bowl of water
  • An empty bowl
  • One tray of gummy molds
  • One freezer bag
  • And a dried whole seaweed (optional if using gelatin instead of Agar)
  • 1/4 cup – sour sugar
  • 900mg – BHO oil
  • 1/3 cup – cherry-flavored sugar (or another sweetener of your choice)
  • 1/2 cup – water
  • 1/4 cup – agar seaweed powder OR unflavored gelatin

For the non-vegans, gelatin can replace the seaweed. It’s an odorless substance with a discrete taste profile.

Preparation and Cooking Directions

  1. Begin by adding the dried seaweed to a bowl of water to soak and set it aside.
  2. In the other bowl add the agar seaweed powder and mix it thoroughly with water.
  3. After letting the seaweed soak for 5 minutes, remove it and add it to the water and powder mix.
  4. Microwave the resulting mix for 1-2 minutes until it begins to foam.
  5. Remove the dried seaweed.
  6. Add the cherry-flavored sugar or whichever sweetener you choose. Stir it in well.
  7. Add the BHO extract and mix it through the existing mixture until it absorbs well.
  8. Microwave once again for 1-2 minutes until it foams
  9. Pour the solution into the mold and place it in the fridge to cool.
  10. Optionally place the gummies in a freezer bag with some sour sugar and shake well for a zingy taste!

What Makes BHO Ideal for Edibles?

As a potent source of THC, BHO is ideally suited to edibles. With the unnecessary plant matter removed, all that remains are the active compounds that deliver a potent hit.

Another advantage is the ability to easily measure the dose. With BHO generally containing 60-95% THC content, it becomes a simple calculation to calculate the resulting dose in your edibles. The above recipe calls for 900 mg of BHO. That 900mg dry weight at say 70% THC would result in 630mg of THC. By simply dividing the total THC quantity by the number of resulting gummies, you have an easily quantifiable dose for each gummy.

Care with Dosing Cannabis Gummies

With 630mg of THC infused across your gummy batch, it’s all too easy to eat more of those sweet-tasting treats than you actually need. Remember that most edibles sold at dispensaries are below 10mg of THC. This will generally be plenty for those with a standard tolerance, while those more accustomed to medicating with higher doses may tolerate more. Start slow and work your way up until you find your dose, they can take up to 2 hours to kick in. It’s always better to err on the side of caution. You can always eat more, but there’s no simple way to tone the effect down if you eat too many!

Storing Your BHO Gummies

Once they gel, the gummies will hold their shape at room temperature. But if you plan on consuming the batch slowly over the course of time, it’s best to place them in the fridge until it’s time to dose. When stored properly, you can expect them to last for 2 weeks.

That won’t work very well because you never put the thc through decarboxylation…

  2. Heather Johnson

That’s what I thought too! So decarb in oven first, correct?

WARNING: YOU WILL WASTE YOUR CONCENTRATES WITH THIS RECIPE

Yeah these definitely won’t work as edibles because the concentrate has not been activated for eating; they missed an incredibly critical step to decarb.

Before even starting, the concentrates need to be heated slowly but NO warmer than 220°F for 20 minutes to make the THC is a form your body can digest.

I would think Step 8 resolves the decarb “issue”
