Make Your Own Cannabis-Infused Keto Fat Bombs

Fat bombs are all the rage in keto-land. These are cannabis-infused and perfect for a midday boost of calming zen.

The keto diet and cannabis have a lot in common but you probably would never suspect it, unless you looked at the science. They both have the potential to promote weight loss, fight metabolic disease, and rebalance the body. Combining the two into a delicious energy-boosting snack could have a lot of offer. Enter cannabis fat bombs!

You’ve Heard All About Keto, But Why is It So Trendy Right Now?

We have all been brainwashed into believing that to lose fat, you must lower your fat intake. Everyone from our family doctors to government food guides to popular weight-loss fads say that low-fat means losing fat.

Yet, this understanding of fat is changing. Study after study is now revealing the error of our ways. Instead of the old low-fat craze, high fat might support better weight loss. There is also evidence showing that “mild ketosis may offer therapeutic potential in a variety of different common and rare disease states.” Keto is good for much more than dieting.

The keto diet focuses on high-fat foods and low carb consumption. The Mediterranean diet is only one example of a keto-like diet. Our body loves to burn easy-access sugar for fast energy, but the keto diet is about convincing our body to burn ketones instead. Our liver produces ketones from fatty acids, and, generally, uses them in times of low-calorie intake and high-intensity exercise.

Ketosis, or the process of burning ketones, is a normal bodily process. Instead of operating on energy produced by sugars, your body works on energy from burning fat. The outcomes of this are clear: burning ketones means burning fat!

There are a few different versions of the keto diet, but all focus on low carb intake and high healthy fat intake. This means healthy fats like coconut oil, animal fats, and avocados are on every meal plan. Bread, sugar, and even sweet fruits are on the “do-not-eat” list.

Ketosis, Homeostasis, and Cannabis

Ketosis is a state of consistently burning ketones instead of glucose. This occurs after your body gets into the rhythm of the keto diet. You’ll remain in this state until you start eating carbs again. To stay in ketosis, keep eating fat bombs, avocados, and the like.

While you maintain ketosis, you are technically in a state of insulin homeostasis. Meaning, the typical peaks and valleys of blood-sugar levels start to flatten out. The keto diet can have an especially significant impact through insulin homeostasis in Type 2 diabetes (THCV might help too!)

Cannabis also helps the body return to a state of homeostasis, but this time in response to internal or external stressors. It’s the way cannabis can reduce the experience of anxiety, reduce intruding thoughts from PTSD, or soothe pain. So, when your body experiences stress, in several different ways, cannabis can offer some assistance. Just like your own naturally produced cannabinoids, those found in cannabis try to rebalance your system.

Cannabis and Keto Can Both Induce Weight Loss

Another similarity between the keto diet and cannabis is their effects on weight loss. This might be surprising to hear, but a growing body of evidence shows us that people who consume cannabis weigh less than those who don’t. As it turns out, the lazy, stoner with the munchies is a very inaccurate stereotype.

According to a newly published study that looks at BMI and cannabis consumption, bodyweight had little to no relationship with cannabis consumption. The study surveyed 33,000 people over the course of three years. The authors noted in an interview with The Growth Op, “Contrary to the belief — that marijuana users who have a serious case of the munchies will ultimately gain more weight — those who smoke cannabis, or marijuana, weigh less compared to adults who don’t.”

This is food for thought. It also makes you wonder about the benefits of combining cannabis with the keto diet. Thankfully, cannabinoids work well when eaten in a fat bomb, or other super fatty substances because cannabinoids, like CBD and THC, are fat-soluble. Eaten in a butter or coconut oil, THC has a higher bioavailability than it would otherwise have.

That means that keto-friendly fat bombs are the perfect vehicle for THC edibles.

THC-Infused Keto-Friendly Fat Bombs

Adapted from Chocolate Covered Katie

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup nut butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup infused coconut oil (recipe at the end)
  • Stevia to taste, or 1 tbsp of another favorite liquid sweetener
  • Pinch of salt

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients into a medium bowl.
  2. Mix until well combined and smooth.
  3. If the mixture is too dry, add more nut butter. Or if you want more potent keto fat bombs, add more infused coconut oil.
  4. Pour into ice cube tray, small muffin tin, candy molds, or even small Tupperware containers. Anything small will do.
  5. Place in the freezer to set.
  6. Usually, room temperature is too hot for coconut oil keto fat bombs. You’ll need to store in an airtight container in the freezer until you’re ready to eat.

Need the Recipe for Infused Coconut Oil? No Stress!

Ingredients:

  • 28g cannabis flower
  • 1 lb coconut oil

Tools:

  • Cheese Cloth
  • Elastic Band
  • Slow Cooker
  • Mason Jars

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (if decarbing in the oven)
  2. Roughly grind the cannabis flower into an even consistency. Using scissors or a knife on a cutting board is fine.
  3. Decarboxylate the cannabis. Place the ground up flower on a lined baking sheet, and bake for 30 minutes. Or if you’re worried about the smell, use a water bath.
  4. Combine decarbed cannabis and coconut oil in the slow cooker, on a low-medium setting.
  5. Put the lid on, and let the slow cooker do its job for three hours.
  6. Using the elastic to hold the cheesecloth over the mouth of a mason jar,  pour the liquid coconut oil and cannabis through the cheesecloth. This strains out the remaining plant material.
  7. Squeeze out the cheesecloth, and secure the infused coconut oil in the jar with an airtight lid. Store in a cool, dry place.

Combining the powers of keto fat bombs with a THC infusion is an innovative and healthy snack. A fat bomb is also highly adaptable. Try new nut butter, add shredded coconut or even a handful of healthy nuts. Whatever healthy fats you have in your baking cupboard make for perfect additions.

Plus, you can always experiment with potency and strain. If the coconut butter infusion turns out to be highly potent, cut the infused coconut oil with regular coconut oil. You can also try different strains for different effects. Either way, the world of infused fat bombs is your oyster!

Hi, I am currently on a Keto diet myself and have found the weed bombs to be amazing. I’m not looking to be on the Keto diet for the rest of my life though and some of my friends who aren’t on the diet have just obviously found the bombs pretty bitter. Could you replace the cocoa with say drinking chocolate or how much normal sugar instead of sweetener would you advise? Thanks

The cocoa is used because it has high fiber and low sugar. I’m not sure that a drinking chocolate would achieve true keto. Definitely don’t add any sugar instead of sweetener. Maybe I non-keto version for the friends. Fat bombs are fuel for the keto body and not a great snack for non-keto folks.
